This year the outbreak of the First World War will be remembered in many parts of Europe. As a European organization, the CPCE also feels impelled to recall the events around the First World War, as this war had a crucial influence on further developments on our continent. The nationalist movements before the beginning and the drawing of new political borders at the end of the war deepened the rifts between Christians and churches, and weighed heavily on the emerging ecumenical movement. In addition, the war left deep scars in the biographies of individuals and groups. The CPCE therefore regards it as paramount to work for sustainable peace and reconciliation with the aim of finding ways for Europeans to live together in peace.
